Loft in Cinema 4D is a generator object that creates a smooth surface by interpolating between multiple splines. This tool is perfect for modeling complex shapes with flowing transitions between cross-sections.

What It Is

  • The Loft object generates a polygonal mesh by connecting two or more splines.
  • Allows for the creation of smooth, organic surfaces by blending between profiles.
  • Supports open and closed splines with customizable interpolation settings.
  • Can create complex forms like tubes, ribbons, and custom surfaces from simple shapes.

How It Works

  1. Create or select two or more splines representing the cross-sections of the desired shape.
  2. Add a Loft object from the Generators menu.
  3. Make the splines children of the Loft object in the Object Manager in the order they should be connected.
  4. Adjust the Loft settings for interpolation, subdivisions, and surface options.
  5. Use caps, fillets, and other modifiers to refine the mesh if needed.
  6. Apply materials and further deformers to complete the model.

Use Cases

  • Modeling smooth surfaces like ribbons, architectural elements, or organic shapes.
  • Creating custom objects by blending different spline profiles.
  • Generating complex tubular structures and technical parts.
  • Designing stylized forms for product visualization and animation.

Benefits

  • Enables smooth, flowing geometry from simple spline inputs.
  • Non-destructive workflow with easy spline editing.
  • Flexible control over surface detail and smoothness.
  • Integrates well with other modeling and animation tools.
